Sailing
The first time I found myself under sail was near Fajardo, Puerto Rico. I remember seeing the giant sheet climb the mast and grab the breeze. I was taken by its primal simplicity. Men have been riding the wind for thousands of years and the basics of sailing remain relatively unchanged. Since being propelled by the elements that day I have an unmistakable attraction to sailing. In fact, one of the most amazing sunsets I have ever seen was near Clearwater, Florida. As the sun dipped into the horizon, as if on cue, a sailboat in the distance crossed in front of it. Similar to this:
It would have made an amazing picture had I had a camera available. The picture exists but you can’t see it. It is burned into my brain. I’ll never forget that sunset and I won’t be happy until I have a sailboat of my own.
